Depersonalization involves a subjective sense of unreality or detachment from oneself, as if you’re observing your thoughts, feelings, or body from outside yourself. Reality testing remains intact, so you don’t lose contact with what is actually happening around you.

This helps explain why the other descriptions don’t fit: sudden memory loss points to a dissociative amnesia problem, not a self-detachment phenomenon; severe mood swings reflect mood disorders with fluctuating emotions rather than a persistent sense of unreality; and hearing voices would be a psychotic symptom with perceptual disturbances and impaired reality testing, which isn’t the hallmark of depersonalization. The defining idea is that you feel detached from your own experiences without losing touch with reality.
